LISTENING TO: Eva Cassidy: Grab her stuff off iTunes, it will make you believe in angels… Harry Nilsson. A rather deranged angel. Heart: These Dreams. What an awesome song. I got a chance to work with these folks thanks to Pal Kippax.

Um, sorry it’s been so long since I last poasted (sic). I never really get a summer (workquirkwork), but then I get to really love the fall. For me, that actually starts in mid August — when we get a spectacular run of breezy Nor’west days and the clearest air out of Canada — and runs until the forbidden dusky vibes of late October.
No song grabs this feeling better than Gordon Bok’s Tune for November (www.timberhead.com) .
Listening to: Jesse Winchester Humour Me and Gentleman of Leisure – Always at or near the top of my ever-evolving desert island list; and an old Beatles mix cassette tape in my campaign car. I will put off replacing both our cars as long as I can, because the cars still have cassette players and I still have several million hours of great music and talk on cassette.
Reading: The Appeal by John Grisham. This was supposed to be one of my vacation pleasures but obviously I didn’t take enough time off. I should talk to my boss about that.
So happy about: the NFL is back!
The wife is bummed about: the NFL is back.

I have a long-time, semi-secret passion for big old airplanes. I’m especially turned on by the last of piston-engine -driven airliners, many of which had their careers shortened by the onset of the jet engine. Sexiest of the bunch? The Lockheed Constellation. Thanks to pilot pal Peter Smith, here is some rare Connie porn:

What a concept: TIME-SHARE the pets
I consider it fairly well-established that I’m not always at the cutting-edge of culture, but I may be on to something here.
It turns out that the wife and I have been time-sharing our cat for some time now. Our neighbors are cat lovers. They have four and a half cats over there. Their half-cat is our little tough guy, Marley. This is fine by me. I think Linda’s a little bewildered that her feline friend would take his meals elsewhere.
Although I’ve had many more cats than wives in my life, I am not a cat-lover. I fully subscribe to the theory that dogs have families, cats have staff.
Now, if I could only get a few neighbors to time-share the dog in my life.

The weird shark attacks this week got me to thinking… and that’s never a good thing.
Anyway, I had a cat that started acting nuts one morning and made a friend go see what was wrong… seconds before an earthquake hit and a huge TV fell right where she was sitting. She surely would have been terribly injured had she moved just one second later.
Well… the last time sharks started going mental, 9/11 happened.
I’m just saying…

Watching Bush’s press conference this morning, I am filled with a terrible sadness. Bush is scary petulant when it comes to drilling in ANWR.
The simplest way to say it… the way I think we can all understand… is that we as a nation have a terrible addiction to oil. And Alaska is our poor mother’s last valuable possession, her wedding ring. And Bush is telling us, “Shhh, she’s asleep. Let’s go up there, steal that ring and sell it.”
Instead why don’t we just kick the habit? Isn’t that obvious? Why don’t they see that?
